What is Brazilian Jiu Jitsu?

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is a sophisticated martial art based in ground fighting. Along with this it teaches: takedowns, takedown defence, ground control and submissions. Submissions refer to techniques that either cut off an opponents air supply (chokes) or look to take advantage of a joint (such as armbars).

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu was largely unknown outside of Brazil until 1993 when the art was show cased in a no holds barred event which pitted different fighting disciplines against each other in a “Anything Goes” tournament to prove the effectiveness of the art. Royce Gracie, the Brazilian Jiu Jitsu representative submitted his way through 3 tough opponents of various fighting discipline which included, Boxing, Shoot fighting & Kickboxing to emerge the victor.

Since then Brazilian Jiujitsu has continued to grow world wide and provides one of the foundational disciplines for modern Mixed Martial Arts (MMA).

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu can be practiced recreationally or competitively and is a powerful system of self-defence. It promotes the principle that a smaller person can successfully defend themselves against larger more aggressive opponents with the use of proper technique and strategy.

People can start training in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu at any age and regular practice will encourage a high level of fitness, improved balance, confidence and coordination.
