What is Brazilian Jiu Jitsu?
BJJ is a unique martial art with a strong emphasis on grappling and ground fighting. Submission holds such as chokes and joint locks are the preferred choice of attack.
What is the difference between Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and Japanese Ju Jitsu?
Brazilian Jiu Jitsu offers more in the way of ground fighting techniques whereas Japanese Ju Jitsu generally places more emphasis on standing techniques. This is a generalisation however and largely depends on the instructor and what curriculum is taught.
What is class like?
A typical class lasts about an hour and a half. Classes start with a short warm up and stretch. 30 to 40 minutes is spent working on techniques and then sparring or live drilling for 15 to 20 minutes.
Do I have to wear a uniform?
Yes, a uniform, or gi, is required for class. Our Club gi colours are white, blue and black which can be purchased through the club.
No gi classes are also taught but the majority of classes are performed with the gi.
What is the ranking system like?
The ranking system in BJJ consists of 5 belts: White, Blue, Purple, Brown and Black. Each belt takes about 2 years of consistent training before graduating to the next level. It takes about 10 years on average to achieve the rank of Black Belt in BJJ. It really all depends though on how much time one puts in on the mats.
Will I get fit?
Yes, if you train regularly and put in the required effort.
Will I get hurt?
Like most contact sports, knocks and bruises are going to happen. A lot of care is taken by the instructors to educate all students of the certain pitfalls and dangers associated with sparring and ensures all students respect their partners so unnecessary injuries don’t happen.
