Seminar: BJJ Black Belt David Onuma
We attended a seminar on Saturday 24th July at the GB Academy in Bournemouth. The seminar was lead by BJJ Black Belt David Onuma who received his belt under Ricardo Vieira and Rodrigo Cabral, he also bought along one of his students a blue belt called Corey Donoghue.
It was a 4 hour session, 3 hours of technical then 1 hour of rolling.
We are looking forward to his next seminar that should be in a months time!
The First Trip to Bend, Oregon.
Steve first discovered The Roy Dean Academy after coming across Jimmy Da silva’s Purple belt demonstration on YouTube. He was impressed with the high level of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu demonstrated so he started researching the RDA a bit more. Roy’s Website and YouTube Videos are watched by thousands upon thousands of Jiu Jitsu buffs the world over.
After a few emails and phone calls our flights to Bend were booked, accommodation sorted and Gi’s packed! We would make the long journey to visit Roy Dean in September of 2008.
Our first trip was an exciting two week adventure, filled with Jiu Jitsu. Roy was also moving into his new academy (see earlier blog for pictures) so it was nice to be a part of a new era.
When we arrived, after 24 hours of traveling we were glad to have a few days to recover, but after a couple of days we were chomping at the bit, then the hard work began. We planned to train in every single class and fit in as many private sessions with Roy as possible.
Our house in Sunriver, a 15 minute drive to the academy. It came with a HUGE a hot tub – perfect for relaxing those muscles after a hard BJJ session!
Our initial training session was also the first training session for Roy’s students in the new academy. After the technical part of the lesson we were taken to one side and Roy evaluated our skill level. Jamie, Kirsty and I rolled with TJ Brodeur and Steve with Donald Bowerman. Then we rolled with Roy! it was my first time rolling with a Black Belt, and a brilliant experience. Once the the class ended, Roy outlined areas in our individual games that needed work, and told us what we should aim to get out of the next couple of weeks.
After a few days of intense training (sometimes twice a day at 1.5 hours per session) we were all feeling exhausted, it seemed to take ages to get get our breath back after rolling. It was not until someone reminded us that we were at 3,623 feet elevation, that we cut ourselves a little slack!!
We managed to fit in a trip to Crater Lake – formed by the collapse of the volcano Mount Mazama, with a maximum depth of 1,949…………… there was only one thing to do…………

……… Jump in!
The rest of our time in Bend was spent training, eating in many of Bend’s restaurants and sampling ales in brewery’s / pubs. We also found time to visit Benham Falls and Lava Lands. We did find some time to relax in the hot tub at our lovely house!
During our trip Roy asked Steve to prepare his Blue Belt Demonstration for the end of our stay, he was very pleased and started planning straight away. It was a great way to end an amazing trip! Lots of Roy’s students turned up and gave tips to Steve during the rolling section. Steve was completely exhausted by the end of a tough demonstration consisting of the technical portion (where he choked, Arm barred and threw me around!) and twenty minutes of live rolling with Paul Heatherman, James Malone, Rick Ellis and Finally Roy Dean. In the evening, Roy joined us for a lovely meal and a few drinks.
We had to leave the house at 6 am the next morning, so with slightly sore heads mixed with a little sadness, we packed up and headed for the airport, already reminiscing about the past two weeks, we all agreed that this was the beginning of something great…………..
